GPS Trackit is a good fleet management system with strong driver and vehicle management features that position it well for cargo transport businesses, since it allows users to monitor driver behavior, provides cargo temperature monitoring, and has great asset tracking integrations.

However, the system's price will rise with the many paid add-ons that most fleets will need, from the scheduling and dispatch tools that are only available through the field service add-on to the extra charge for driver ID and even ELD compliance.

These tools are available at lower costs from our top three recommended fleet systems. We rate GPS Trackit a 3.7 overall score out of 5, compared to Verizon's 4.7/5, Samsara's 4.7/5, and Omnitracs' 4.5/5.

GPS Trackit Driver and Vehicle Management

GPS Trackit earns a high 4.8/5 driver management score, due to great reporting, alerts, compliance and data collection tools. The service lacks dedicated crash reporting, but this isn't uncommon for fleet systems, and can be compensated for. Trackit also earned a strong 4.3/5 vehicle management score, which puts it ahead of most, although not our three highest-overall rated fleet systems (Verizon, Samsara, and Omnitracs).

Vehicle Maintenance and Security

GPS Trackit offers rock-solid vehicle management tools across most categories, but falls down with one big feature: It doesn't offer hardware diagnostics.

Maintenance reminders can be created to automatically track regular needs like tire rotations or oil replacement. Beyond this, the service lacks vehicle diagnostics tools, so common hardware issues like faulty lights will need to be manually logged. Speed monitoring can compare actual vehicle speed to the posted speed limits for each street it is on, helping highlight safety issues. Distance data is also available, and can be broken down by driver or by delivery. DVIR reporting is supported as well.

GPS Trackit includes two features that many fleet systems omit: It will log engine temperatures, quickly letting managers know of overheating, and it offers a paid add-on for tracking cargo temperatures as well. This last tool is not available from otherwise feature-rich options like Teletrac Navman and Azuga (although Verizon and Samsara offer it), and it's a key feature for any refrigerated delivery service.

Fuel Management

Some GPS Trackit alerts (like overspeeding and idling) can help managers lower fuel consumption, and users can generate fuel-specific reports to track these improvements over time. GPS Trackit also tracks and generates reports for the number of miles driven by state, a key indicator used for IFTA compliance when tracking fuel taxes.

GPS Trackit stands out for its detailed fuel card functionality: Managers can restrict purchases to a certain amount of transactions or within a set time window, and can set custom purchase levels for each user. The cards are limited to locations that accept MasterCard.

GPS Trackit has great fuel tracking tools despite its lack of route optimization, which can trim route durations to further reduce fuel use. If you want the absolute best fuel tracking, Azuga is for you, but GPS Trackit goes just fine.

Safety Features

GPS Trackit logs plenty of data needed for safety tracking, and can both send real-time alerts and summary reports to ensure nothing is missed. The system's analytics dashboard lets fleet managers monitor historical data complete with charts and graphs, communicate with two-way messaging, and use driver scorecards to rank drivers by frequency of dangerous driving events, which can encourage friendly competition for the safest behavior. Trackable driving events include rapid acceleration, hard braking or turns, sudden stops, idling and speeding.

Crash reporting is not detailed, though: A dash cam integration can provide video evidence in the case of a collision, but any other reporting is limited to events such as hard breaking or speeding. There is no dedicated panic button either, though drivers can use the messaging function, and 24/7 theft prevention is available.

With the dash cam add-on, drivers will even get in-cab alerts notifying them of safety violations immediately, a tool most fleet systems do not provide. Driver ID kits are available at an extra cost: These will allow managers to track drivers' safety records even when they switch vehicles regularly. GPS Trackit offers great safety tools overall, although the RAM fleet system is better for those who want a great driver ID feature without the extra cost.

GPS Trackit Vehicle Tracking

GPS Trackit only earns a 3/5 tracking score from our research, and for one big reason: Scheduling and dispatch tools are not available unless you pay extra for the field service add-on. Without this extra charge, managers are able to create routes using a Google Maps interface that logs arrivals and departure times, but managers cannot create and assign jobs to drivers. Even with the add-on, no automatic route optimization and no traffic alerts are available.

Scheduling and dispatch is a core need for many fleets and is included in nearly all the full fleet management systems we've reviewed: If your business needs it, you'll either need to get the GPS Trackit field service add-on, or opt for another fleet system entirely. Omnitracs and Azuga are two highly rated systems that both have great optimization and scheduling functionality.

Aside from a lack of scheduling ability, GPS Trackit does have a nice array of tracking tools, including several helpful functions that not all fleet systems will provide. Typical fleet tools that GPS Trackit has include speed, safety, and general fleet reports, mileage summaries, and custom alerts for either email or text that can be triggered by incidents including speeding, geofencing, off-hours activity, or unauthorized movement.

Less common functions that GPS Trackit offers include custom locations (called landmarking), on-demand temperature reports, and driver scorecards, which can log individual driver's safety habits.

GPS Trackit has a 60-second refresh rate, so managers will have near real-time visibility. This isn't the fastest (Verizon and Samsara can be as fast as 30 seconds) but it isn't uncommon for the industry and should work fine for most fleets.

GPS Trackit Pricing and Value

GPS Trackit offers custom pricing (an industry norm), so we can't clarify exactly how much you'll need to pay for the plan that fits your fleet needs. However, our research team estimates starting costs are around $23.95 per vehicle per month, with GPS hardware included for free.

The service does not include contracts and it offers lifetime warranties, two perks that put GPS Trackit above the 1-3 year contracts and limited warranties that are typical to many fleet system competitors including top names like Verizon (which itself starts around $23.50) and Samsara (starts at around $27). That said, Verizon and Samsara do offer more features with each plan, which boost their value on the whole.

GPS Trackit charges extra for add-ons including field service, dashcams, driver ID, and ELD compliance.

GPS Trackit offers a free demo but no trial, alongside a standard 30-day cancelation notice requirement. No installation service is offered, since self-installation is expected. Our team gave GPS Trackit an okay 3.9/5 pricing score overall, as starting prices are in line with the $25-35 industry average, while the lifetime warranty offsets the lack of a free trial.

GPS Trackit Help and Support

GPS Trackit has a dedicated team of installation specialists to help its users, but the large majority install the system on their own. In most cases, users will just have to connect the unit's power wire and mount a GPS antenna. Users can also access an online knowledge base that includes live training support, though no chatbot support is offered. Trackit's systems and support are in the US only, so Canadian fleets should look elsewhere.

Phone and email support is available, although phone hours are not 24/7. Instead, you'll need to chose from a few options in the Eastern timezone: Customer service hours are weekdays from 8 am to 8pm, billing department hours are weekdays from 8 am to 5 pm, and technical support hours are 6 am to 5:30 pm on weekdays, with 7 am to 3:30 pm hours on weekends. If your plan includes a dedicated Fleet Advisors, you'll be restricted to 8 am to 5 pm hours on weekdays as well.

Our team rated GPS Trackit a 3.9/5 support score, which is okay but not stellar. Many but not all other fleet systems include 24/7 phone hours, and if around-the-clock aid is important, you'll be better off with Verizon, Samsara, or Linxup.

GPS Trackit Installation and Other Features

Like all other modern fleet systems, GPS Trackit uses cloud-based software, so it's accessible everywhere and its data is always backed up. Unlike some systems, it also offers both hardwired and easy-install plug-and-play hardware units.

The service has no integrations with third-party GPS maps, but many fleet systems do not offer these, since the systems themselves handle GPS tracking. GPS Trackit does have a mobile app, GPS Trackit Cloud, though reviews aren't promising: It has just 2 stars on iOS from 8 ratings, and hasn't been reviwed enough on the Google Play store to have any rating at all.

Our researchers gave GPS Trackit a 2.8/5 product features score. It doesn't fall down entirely, as it does offer multiple hardware options, helps with IFTA tax reporting, and includes mobile functionality, but you can find fleet systems with more impressive integrations. Our highest scorers when it comes to integrations were Verizon, Omnitracs, and Geotab, which all scored 4.8/5 or higher.

GPS Trackit Asset Tracking

GPS Trackit's asset tracking service is an extra cost on top of their fleet tracking service, but the two integrate for easy tracking. Managers may assign powered or unpowered assets to unlimited users, and can either view reports on-demand or schedule them to auto-deploy.

The asset tracking service also has a map view, color-coded asset statuses, custom locations, geofencing, asset grouping, data history stored from the life of install, unlimited free data storage, an optional backup battery, and a mobile app for technicians in the field.

Heavy equipment tracking is included, with engine hours and employee job site arrivals or departures all logged. Text or email alerts can be triggered for scheduled maintenance or geofencing.

GPS Trackit ELD Compliance

Unlike most of the top fleet management services we've reviewed, GPS Trackit's ELD compliance functionality costs extra. Their prices are not public, but if it's anywhere close to $10 per vehicle per month, a fleet that needs to stay in compliance will likely save money with a starter plan from a full fleet system that bundles in ELD tools, such as Verizon or Samsara.

However, it does the job: drivers can use it to easily automate their hours of service (HOS) logs and track IFTA compliance in addition to generating and transmitting full reports at the touch of a button thanks to the intuitive interface on their driver app.

Managers can customize their driver alerts, ensuring drivers are kept accountable to regulation and ELD violations are minimized. The ELD compliant driver app from GPS Trackit is called Apollo ELD, and is available for download from the Apple Store and Google Play.

Methodology: How We Rated GPS Trackit
